FC Dallas Forward Carlos Ruiz Voted MLS Player of the Month for May
June 2, 2006 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (June 2, 2006) - FC Dallas forward Carlos Ruiz notched six goals and two assists in May and earned MLS Player of the Month honors while leading the team to a 3-1-1 record during the month. Dallas now sits in first place in the Western Conference standings - seven points clear of second place Houston Dynamo.
This marks the second consecutive year in which Ruiz was named MLS Player of the Month for May, and it is the sixth time he has received Player of the Month honors - the MLS record. Clint Mathis and Diego Serna rank second all-time in Player of the Month awards with three each.
Ruiz has an active five-game goal scoring streak dating back to May 6, a 4-3 loss to Houston, their only loss during May. The streak equals the FC Dallas club record previously set by Damian (1997) and Jason Kreis (2004). Ruiz's run also moved him into second place in the Budweiser Golden Boot scoring charts, behind Houston Dynamo forward Brian Ching.
Ruiz has played in 100 MLS regular season games and he has scored 67 goals during that span. The retired Roy Lassiter is the only player with more goals scored through his first 100 games, having scored 69 goals in that span as a member of D.C. United, Tampa Bay, Miami and Kansas City. Taylor Twellman (64) and Raul Diaz Arce (60) are the only other MLS players to reach 60 goals through their first 100 games.
The MLS Player of the Month is selected following the last game of each month throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA). The PSRA votes among players nominated by their respective teams.
