D.C. United News Release
Philadelphia, Pa. (Jan. 15, 2015) - D.C. United has announced the selection of two players from the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, forward Miguel Aguilar from the University of San Francisco in the first round (17th pick overall) and Maryland midfielder Dan Metzger in the second round (42nd overall).
Aguilar was a four-year standout at San Francisco, where he played 72 games, scoring 15 goals and adding nine assists. In 2014, he was an All-West Coast Conference First Team selection for a USF team that finished second in the West Coast Conference. He is the first Don selected in the MLS SuperDraft since 2010 when Conor Chinn was taken in the third round and the highest selection since Rob Valentino in 2008.
Metzger is United's second draft pick in three seasons from Maryland, following the addition of Taylor Kemp in 2013. Metzger led the Terrapins in minutes played in 2014, starting all 22 games en route to be named First Team All-Big Ten. He was also a First Team All-ACC selection in 2013 and finished his career in College Park with eight goals and four assists in 88 games played. Metzger was part of a class that finished with a 64-15-14 record in four seasons, captured two ACC tournament and regular season titles, a Big Ten tournament and regular season championship, and made back-to-back trips to the College Cup in 2012 and 2013.
D.C. United players are set to begin the 2015 preseason on Jan. 22, when they will report to RFK Stadium. The Black-and-Red will have its first media availability of the season after training in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 23, before departing to Bradenton, Fla., on Jan. 24. The team will also train and compete in preseason matches in Austin, Tex., and Dallas, Tex.
Prior to the opening of the 2015 MLS regular season vs. Montreal at RFK Stadium on March 7 at 3 p.m. ET, the Black-and-Red will compete in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals. The team will face Costa Rican side Alajuelense on the road on Thursday, Feb. 26, and in a return leg at RFK Stadium on Wednesday, March 4.
