Orlando City SC Selects Cyle Larin with First Overall Pick in 2015 MLS SuperDraft

Published on January 15, 2015 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

PHILADELPHIA (Thursday, January 15, 2015) - With the first draft selection in their club's history, the expansion Orlando City SC chose Generation adidas forward Cyle Larin with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas, held Thursday at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Larin becomes the second player out of the University of Connecticut selected with the first overall pick in as many years, and the third overall in the school's history.

The second expansion club beginning play in 2015 in Major League Soccer, New York City FC, selected Oregon State University product Khiry Shelton with the second pick in the draft with their inaugural selection.

The University of Connecticut was one of two schools with two players selected in the first round, as Sergio Campbell was taken at No. 19 by Columbus Crew SC. Syracuse University also had two players selected in the opening 21 picks, both by Toronto FC (Alex Bono, No. 6; Skylar Thomas, No. 11).

Larin, who is a member of the Canadian U-20 national team currently competing at the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship in Jamaica, was one of five members of the Generation adidas class, all selected within the first 22 picks overall, with two selected in the opening three picks. Romario Williams, out of the University of Central Florida, was selected third overall by the Montréal Impact.

Bono was the first player called into the U.S. men's national team selected in the SuperDraft, currently with the senior squad in the January training camp in southern California. Conor Donovan, a member of the U.S. U-20 national team and a Generation adidas signing, was taken with the No. 22 selection overall by Orlando City SC.

Players from 33 colleges and universities were represented in the 42 selections overall. There were also players selected from 10 different countries: USA, Canada, Jamaica, France, Sweden, England, Germany, Spain, Bosnia and Israel.
