
Cyclones Square Off With Dayton

COMING UP: The Cincinnati Cyclones, the 2008 Kelly Cup champions, play a pair of games against intrastate foe Dayton this weekend. Friday night (Dec. 19), the teams meet at the Nutter Center for a 7:30pm tilt (carried on MAX-FM 97.7 and 99.5). Saturday (Dec. 20), the squad come to U.S. Bank Arena on Beat Dayton Night. Fans coming to the game on December 20 will receive a 'Beat Dayton' t-shirt courtesy of Fox Sports Ohio. Following the games this weekend, the team will have a few days off for the holidays before squaring off with the Bombers in Fairborn again on December 26.
IN THE COMMUNITY TOMORROW: The Cyclones players will be at Ronald McDonald House on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 16), delivering more than $1000 in gifts for the holidays--courtesy of the Cyclones organization and their business partner, Dream Catchers Coaches, Limited of Yellow Springs, Ohio. Dream Catchers provides the bus for road trips for the Cyclones. Four Cincinnati players (Barret Ehgoetz, Martin Houle, Conrad Martin and T.J. McElroy) will spend part of Tuesday night at Cincinnati Children's Hospital--visiting the Cardiac Care patients at the annual Aubrey Rose Foundation celebration. It is the third consecutive year the club has been involved with the event.
ABOUT SATURDAY NIGHT...: A Peter Tsimklais goal with 36.4 seconds remaining allowed Charlotte to take a 3-2 win at U.S. Bank Arena. Barret Ehgoetz and Thomas Beauregard collected the goals and Martin Houle stopped 27 shots in the defeat. The loss was the third straight for Cincinnati.
ABOUT FRIDAY NIGHT: The Cyclones were victimized by four first period goals in a 6-2 loss to Wheeling. Tobias Holm netted a first period hat trick and David Brown turned aside 27 shots in collecting the win. Rob Sirianni picked up two goals and an assist as well. The Cyclones got goals from Jimmy Kilpatrick and Michael Cohen in the defeat. Martin Houle took the loss.
ABOUT TUESDAY NIGHT...: Charlotte got first period goals about a minute and a half apart and sailed to a 4-1 win over the Cyclones. Kyle Gajewski was solid between the pipes, stopping 33 shots in the defeat--including several from point-blank range. Ben Gordon netted the only goal of the evening.
ABOUT MONDAY NIGHT...: Despite having eleven players feeling the pain of flu-like symptoms, the Cyclones picked up a 4-3 win over North Division leader Johnstown. Cincinnati struck for three first period scores, as Mark Van Guilder, Olivier Latendresse and Ben McLeod all lit the lamp. After the Chiefs had rallied to tie the game at 3-3, Ian McKenzie slammed home his second score of the season with 4:23 to go to give Cincinnati the victory. Kyle Gajewski stopped 21 shots in taking his fifth win of the year.
LEAGUE LEADERS: The Cyclones lead the ECHL with 37 first period goals.....Cincinnati has surrendered 34 third period goals--most in the league.....The Cyclones have played a league-high eight overtime games....Cincinnati has six shorthanded goals scored.....
ADJUSTING THE LINEUP: The Cyclones had Olivier Latendresse recalled to Hamilton (AHL) on Tuesday. Defenseman Joe Ryan got the call from Toronto (AHL) on Wednesday. Thursday forward Mark Santorelli was recalled to Milwaukee (AHL). Defenseman Frederic St. Denis and goaltender Loic Lacasse were reassigned to Hamilton (AHL). So far this season, eleven players have played with the Cyclones and been recalled, reassigned or played with American Hockey League teams this season. During the 2007-08 Kelly Cup championship season, 22 players earned such promotions.
TOOMEY STEPS RIGHT IN: Rookie forward Ryan Toomey was driving in to Cincinnati on Monday, ready to begin his pro career this weekend. Arriving in town at 6pm, he discovered he would be in the lineup for his pro debut and had an assist in the first period of the win. Toomey began the year as a fifth-year senior at Mercyhurst College and came to Cincinnati at the suggestion of defenseman Conrad Martin who had played with him at the school. Ryan collected his first multi-point game as a pro with assists on the two goals Saturday night.

WEBER REACHES CENTURY MARK: Head Coach Chuck Weber picked up his 100th regular season victory on November 29. Now in his third season directing the Cyclones, Weber has a 103-54-16 mark (.648 winning percentage). The win on November 30 allowed Chuck to pass Warren Young for the club lead in regular season wins. Young needed three full seasons to post his 100-86-24 (.533) record.
LATENDRESSE LIGHTS 'EM UP: Cyclones forward Olivier Latendresse is second in the ECHL in goal scoring with 18. He has also assembled a 16-game point scoring streak, the longest current stretch in the league and second-longest in club history behind David Desharnais' 27-game effort last season (12/31 through 3/12). Latendresse has collected 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points during this time. Last season, Olivier averaged 1.458 points per game with Cincinnati (7-28-35 in 24 games) and is tallying 1.43 per contest this year. Projecting his 18 goals and 15 assists for the remainder of the year, he is on pace to score 56 goals and add 46 assists for 102 points. Latendresse was reassigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL) by the Montreal Canadiens (NHL) on Tuesday (December 9).
HAVEN'T WE PLAYED THIS GAME BEFORE?: The Cyclones have had 36 different players play already this season. Cincinnati used 46 players all of last season, in claiming the Kelly Cup. Head Coach Chuck Weber has used 20 different lineups this season.

ATTENDANCE NUMBERS UP: The Cyclones have drawn 34,343 to the first 15 games at U.S. Bank Arena this season, an average of 2,289--which is 22nd in the ECHL. Through the first 15 games of last season, the club drew 26,322--an average of 1,755. Cincinnati did not reach 34,343 until the 18th home game of 2007-08--reaching 36,446 through those 18 dates, an average of 2,024 as of January 5, 2008. Attendance this season is up 30.5 percent over the first 15 dates of a year ago--when the Cyclones had the highest percentage increase in attendance (36.8 percent) of any pro hockey team in North America. The 30.5 increase is the second-highest among all pro hockey teams this season (Tulsa-CHL-43.3 pct.). Averaging 537 fans more per game than a year ago through 15 dates--the Cyclones are one of six teams in minor pro hockey this season to average at least an extra 500 fans more per game than a year ago.
MILLER LITE CYCLONES COACHES SHOW: The Miller Lite Cyclones Coaches Show will be held tonight from 7-8pm at Jefferson Hall at Newport on the Levee. Head Coach Chuck Weber and a pair of players are usually on hand each week. Tonight, rookie forwards Ian Mackenzie and Ryan Toomey are the guests.
