Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Matt Climie stopped all 31 Alaska shots and Steve Gainey scored the game's only goal on a tip-in with 23.8 seconds left in the second period as Idaho escaped with a 1-0 win over the Aces Sunday before 4,217 at Sullivan Arena.

Alaska's defeat marked its first to Idaho in the last 13 meetings between the two clubs and dropped its record on the six-game homestand to 3-3. The Aces, who had not been shut out all year, still won the season series with the Steelheads 4-1-1, and despite dropping a point behind Victoria in the West Division standings, own a better winning percentage than the Salmon Kings, who routed Phoenix, 6-2, on Sunday.

Five of the six games played between Alaska (16-8-1 overall, 10-4 at home) and Idaho this season began with a scoreless first period, and Sunday was not the exception, as the teams managed a combined 10 shots on goal. Gainey's deflection came on a drive from the left point by defenseman Kory Scoran, and was the only shot to beat Jean-Philippe Lamoureux, who started all six games against the Steelheads this year and finished with a 0.98 GAA and a .968 save percentage in the season series. Climie's 31 saves included a pair of point blank stops against Colin Hemingway and Alexandre Imbeault in the final period. Both teams went scoreless in six power play chances; head-to-head this year, Idaho was 1-40, Alaska 2-37.

First place will be on the line next week when the Aces travel to Victoria for a three-game set. Alaska took two of three from the Salmon Kings in Canada last month. The series opens Wednesday and continues Friday and Saturday, with all three tilts getting underway at 6:05 p.m. with Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show coverage on KFQD AM 750 beginning 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
