Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
BROOKLYN, NY - A three run home run by Cyclones center fielder Anthony Dirocie in the sixth inning was the difference maker on Wednesday night, as Brooklyn defeated the ValleyCats 3-2 at MCU Park. With the win, the Cyclones avoided a series sweep at the hands of Tri-City.
The 'Cats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Alex McKenna hit his third home run in as many days, and fifth on the season. That was all the offense the 'Cats could muster however, going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and leaving seven men on base.
ValleyCats pitching shined once again, as starting pitcher R.J. Freure began the ballgame with three perfect innings. Reliever Cody Deason had no trouble in the fourth and fifth, but allowed a double and a walk in the sixth inning before giving way to Austin Hansen. That's when Dirocie stepped up to the plate and crushed a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence for a 3-2 lead and ultimate victory.
With a team ERA of 2.99, the ValleyCats rank second best in the New York-Penn League behind the Staten Island Yankees, and lead the league with 430 strikeouts, 15 more than the Vermont Lake Monsters.
The loss shrunk the ValleyCats' Stedler Division lead to 2.5 games over the Connecticut Tigers and Lowell Spinners, who both won on Wednesday.
The ValleyCats return home on Thursday to begin a crucial three game series vs. the Spinners. First pitch is 7:00pm for Game Show Night presented by Hudson River Community Credit Union with postgame fireworks presented by Market 32. Tickets are available online at tcvalleycats.com, by visiting the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium box office, or calling 518-629-CATS.
