August 31, 2005 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY -- The Cyclones fell behind early, rallied late but were unable to knock of the Staten Island Yankees, losing by the score of 12-8 on Wednesday night. The teams combined for a whopping 36 hits in the four hour and 24 minute marathon. The game was the longest in the Cyclones five-year history, breaking the previous record of four hours and 13 minutes on August 5, 2004 , in a 15-inning game against the Jamestown Jammers. The Cyclones loss coupled with a Spinners victory pushes the Cyclones 3.5 games behind Lowell in the race for the Wild Card.
The Cyclones dug themselves a deep hole, falling behind 7-0 going into the bottom of the fourth. The Yankees scored four in the second, two in the third and once more in the fourth to take the early lead. But the game was far from over, as the Brooklyn bats started to inch back in the bottom of the fourth. Jonel Pacheco and Drew Butera smashed back-to-back doubles to plate the Cyclones first run before Dirimo Chavez hit his first home run as a Cyclones to cut the deficit to 7-3. The Yankees scored once more in the top of the fifth, but the Yankees struck back with a run in the bottom of the frame on a Jonel Pacheco RBI single to make the score 8-4.
The Yankees piled on two more in the top of the sixth to once again take a commanding lead, this time 10-4. But the Cyclones weren't done for the night as Caleb Stewart's RBI single scored Greg Gonzalez and when Nick Evans smashed a two-run home run just to the left of dead-centerfield, the âClones had trimmed the lead to 10-7. In the eighth, Stewart's second RBI single of the night trimmed the Yankees lead to 10-8, but the Cyclones tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth before the Cyclones went quietly in the bottom of the frame to make the final score 12-8.
Jorge Reyes (4-5) suffered the loss for Brooklyn after allowing six runs on nine hits over his 2.2 innings of work. The Cyclones will look to rebound on Thursday in the home finale for 2005.
