Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
LOWELL, MA --- Jose Contreras and Eduardo Nunez made back-to-back two-out, bases loaded errors in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Lowell Spinners two unearned runs and a 4-2 victory over the Vermont Expos in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at LeLacheur Park.
Tied 2-2 in the eighth, Lowell loaded the bases off Expos reliever Jamie Lehman on a leadoff walk, one-out single and one-out walk. Lehman struckout Dustin Kelly for the second out, but Contreras committed a throwing error on a Patrick Perry groundball and Nunez a fielding error on a Dominic Ramos grounder to give Lowell the two-run lead.
The loss was the seventh straight for Vermont (21-47), marking the longest losing streak of the season. The Expos, who had two six-game losing streaks earlier in the season, are now 0-6 on the current nine-game roadtrip and have lost 11 straight road games.
Vermont had a 2-0 lead two batters into the game after Contreras led off the game with a walk and scored on a two-run homer by Francisco Plasencia. It was the eighth home run of the season for Plasencia, who went 3-for-5 on the night and now leads the Expos with 43 RBI and 24 multi-hit games.
The Expos had plenty of opportunites to score more runs over the first four innings. Two two-out singles and a wild pitch gave Vermont runners on second and third in the first, but Lorvin Louisa struckout. In the top of the second, the Expos loaded the bases after two were out, but Leonard Davis grounded out.
Then in the third, after the Spinners had tied the game 2-2 in the second with three straight two-out hits, Vermont loaded the bases with no outs. But Johhn Poppert and Eduardo Nunez struckout, then Contreras grounded out to keep the game tied. The Expos had runners on first and third with one out in the fourth when Luis Apodaca flied out into a double play as Davis was doubled off first.
That was Vermont's last chance to score has Lowell reliever Hunter Jones struckout struckout the side in the fifth and sixth innings, then struckout Rolando Arnedo to start the seventh inning for his seventh straight punchout. Vermont's only hit after a leadoff single from Plasencia in the fourth was a one-out Contreras single in the ninth.
Expos starter Carlos Martinez allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings, while Lehman (0-1) allowed the two unearned runs on one hit in two innings for the loss. Jones and Argimiro Guanchez (1-4) combined to give up just one hit and strikeout nine in six innings of relief for Lowell. The three Spinner pitchers, including starter Adam Blackley, combined to strikeout 14 Expos batters.
The two-run loss dropped Vermont's record to 1-8 in games decided by two runs. During this seven-game losing streak, the Expos have lost by one or two runs in five of the seven games. Vermont will try and snap the losing streak on Thursday night with the third of five games at Lowell.
