Cyclones Down Renegades 6-1

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - A sixth-inning grand slam by the Brooklyn Cyclones sunk the Hudson Valley Renegades 6-1 on Thursday evening at Heritage Financial Park.

Brooklyn struck right away in the first inning with a pair of runs on an RBI double from Alex Ramirez, and a sacrifice fly from Jaylen Palmer off 'Gades starter Zach Messinger (0-2). On the sacrifice fly, Aldenis Sánchez recorded an outfield assist as well, throwing out Ramirez at third base while attempting to advance to end the inning. It was Sánchez's second outfield assist of the season.

The Renegades offense had a baserunner in four of the six frames against Brooklyn's starter Cameron Foster (1-3). Foster stranded three and used an inning-ending double play to get around the traffic before they broke through in the fifth.

Ben Cowles and Sánchez reached base safely to begin the inning against Foster. With one out, Spencer Jones hit a ball on the ground to second and on the double play attempt, William Lugo threw errantly to first baseman Joe Suozzi. The error allowed Cowles to score, and Jones advanced to second on a throwing error home by Suozzi.

In Messinger's last inning in the sixth, Ramirez walked, and Lugo singled to start the frame. After a strikeout, Omar De Los Santos reached safely on an error by Cowles to load the bases. Messinger (0-2) lasted 5.1 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out six.

Harold Cortijo entered in for Messinger and struck out Drake Osborn, but Mateo Gil turned on a 1-2 pitch from Cortijo and belted it over the wall for a grand slam to push the Brooklyn lead to 6-1.

The Renegades threatened against Manny Rodriguez, but left two runners on base in both the seventh and eighth innings. Danny Watson tossed the final two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Gades to lower his season ERA to 1.83.

Hudson Valley continues its six-game series against the Cyclones on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network beginning at 5:45 p.m. The Renegades will send RHP Juan Carela (1-1, 4.68) to the hill opposite RHP Joander Suárez (0-2, 9.00) for the Cyclones.
