Cutters and Altoona Reach Agreement
July 5, 2004 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Altoona Curve & Williamsport Crosscutters jointly announced an agreement Friday permitting the Curve's ownership group to operate a new short-season affiliated Minor League Baseball franchise in State College, Pennsylvania.
Under Minor League Baseball rules, the Crosscutters, the Pirates' short-season Class-A affiliate in the New York-Penn League, hold territorial rights to Centre County, the county in which State College is located. As a result, Williamsport Crosscutter approval was required for the Curve to be permitted to relocate a franchise to the State College area.
The deal has obtained the approval of both the New York-Penn League and the Eastern League.
"The Crosscutters have been a pleasure to work with and we look forward to implementing many of the mutual marketing ideas that we have discussed as well as building a fun on-field rivalry," said Curve President & Managing Partner Chuck Greenberg. "There are still several more hurdles that we need to clear in order for the new team to become a reality, but now we can move forward to aggressively secure financing for a new ballpark that will become an asset to Centre County in the same way that Blair County Ballpark is to Blair County."
"We look forward to continuing the strong relationship that has been built with the Curve's ownership group far into the future," said Paul Velte, President of the Williamsport Crosscutters. "The addition of a franchise in Centre County should be a strong asset to the future of the New York-Penn League and Minor League Baseball."
The Curve envisions locating the facility on the campus of Penn State University and making it available to both the prospective New York-Penn League franchise and the Penn State baseball program.
