New Jersey Cardinals News Release
This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the Cardinals (9-9) downed the Tri-City ValleyCats (13-5), 5-4. It was the 2nd win in 9 tries for the Cards at Skylands Park, and their first victory since opening night. Donnie Smith (1-0) picked up the win, while Raymar Diaz (2-2) was tagged with the loss for the ValleyCats. Cory Doyne worked a perfect 9th for his *** save of the season.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the 1st, the Cards rallied. Sean Dobson singled to lead off the bottom half of the inning, and he quickly scored on Chris Patricks triple into the right field corner. Patrick came home one batter later on Casey Grimms RBI groundout. Then, in the 3rd came the big blow of the night for the Cards, a three-run home run by LF Steve Sherman, a mammoth blast that cleared all three levels of signage beyond right field. The Cards held on thanks to some sparkling defense for the 5-4 win.
Jake Mullinax was 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a Cardinals season-high 9 games, and Chris Patrick collected 2 hits in 4 at-bats to keep his hitting streak alive at 8 games. The Cards ran their record to 7-2 in one-run games, and a perfect 7-0 when leading after 7 innings.
The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow night at 7:15 at Skylands Park when they take on the Tri-City ValleyCats in game two of their three game set and on Wednesday night in the series finale. Following the game tomorrow, there is a post-game party at the Hampton House Grill and Bar with Cardinals players, coaches and staff.
