New Jersey Cardinals News Release
The New Jersey Cardinals announce that Mike Ferris, the 2nd round draft choice of the St. Louis Cardinals, and Wes Swackhamer, the 5th round choice, have been added to the roster. Ferris, a 62left-handed first basemen from Miami (Ohio) University, was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year in 2004 after setting a school record for home runs with 21 and school and conference records 60 walks. He led the conference in home runs (21), walks (60), total bases (157), slugging percentage (.755) and on-base percentage (.513).
The slugger, who was named the MAC conferences player of the week three times, has received high praise from several national baseball columnists, including Jayson Stark of ESPN.com who called him the best second-round sleeper in the draft. According to Stark, one National League baseball executive said, Of all the players I saw, this guy was the best hitter in the country.
Wes Swackhamer spent the last three seasons at Tulane University where he played outfield and first base. He ranked 3rd on the team with .353 batting average and 2nd with a .434 on-base percentage. The lefty spent his prep career at Delbarton High in Morristown, New Jersey, where he was named a third-team All-America by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association, first-team AP All-State and second team NBC All-State. He becomes the 12th former New Jersey High School (NJC 94 Keith Glauber, Marlboro; NJC 94 Matt Golden, Bishop Ahr; NJC 95/96 Lou Deman, Egg Harbor; NJC 97 David Kim, Cherry Hill East; NJC 97 Chris Martine, Cherry Hill West; NJC 00 Shaun Stokes, Jefferson; NJC 02 Chris Eikhorst, Immaculata; NJC 02 Bryan Flynn; NJC 03/04 Casey Grimm, Seton Hall Prep; NJC 03 Zach Smithlin, Fair Lawn; NJC 03 Mark Michael, Gloucester Catholic) player to play for the Cards.
