Expos tripped up by Mahoning Valley

After scoring 31 runs on 42 hits in the first four games of the seven-game roadtrip, the Expos were shut down by by Scrapper pitchers Tony Porzio and Dan Cevette as Mahoning Valley defeated Vermont 6-2 at Eastwood Field on Monday night in the first of a three-game New York-Penn League series between the two teams.

Vermont took an early 2-0 in the second inning on a Edgardo Baez double, a walk to Steve Mortimer, a Doug Vroman RBI double and a Brad Ditter sacrifice fly off Scrapper starter and Triple-A pitcher Porzio, who gave up three hits over the first three innings in a rehab assignment.

After the Vroman second inning double, the Expos got just three hits (two from Marvin Lowrance) the rest of the game off Porzio and Cevette (2-0), who allowed two hits and struckout five over 5.1 innings of relief for the victory.

Mahoning Valley quickly struck back after falling behind against Expos starter Steven Cook with three runs in the bottom of the second. The Scrappers got back-to-back singles, followed by a RBI double and two-run double for the 3-2 lead.

The Scrappers added another run in the sixth off of Cook (0-2), who allowed four runs on nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts over six innings. Mahoning Valley got their final two runs in the seventh off Vermont reliever Eddie Diaz.

Lowrance and Ofilio Castro both had two hits for Vermont (8-10), which had bused from Oneonta to Mahoning Valley and arrived at their hotel in Niles at 4:00 a.m. Monday morning. Marshall Szabo was 3-for-5 with a run and RBI for the Scrappers, while Mario Matulich had two doubles and Brian Finegan had three RBI.

The Expos, who have still not won three straight games since August of 2002, and the Scrappers will play the middle game of the three-game series on Tuesday night with A.J. Wideman getting the start for Vermont, which returns to Centennial Field on Friday night to start a three-game series with Oneonta.
