Altoona Curve News Release

MANCHESTER, NH--Eddie Candelario faced three batters over the minimum through six innings and struck out nine and the Curve offense scored 12 runs on 16 hits as Altoona defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 12-3, Sunday afternoon at Fisher Cats Ballpark in Manchester, NH. The Curve (44-37) avoided the three-game sweep and finished their six-game road to Portland and New Hampshire with three wins and three losses. Altoona moved back into first place by 1/2 game after Erie lost at home to Reading on Sunday.

Candelario (1-0), pitching in just his second game with the Curve since being added from Bradenton earlier in the week, did not allow a hit until third baseman Rob Cosby blasted a home run to lead off the fifth inning.

The Curve offense scored 12 runs on 16 hits Sunday afternoon after not scoring in 17 2/3 innings, dating back to the first inning of Friday night's game. The Curve tied a season-high with seven extra base hits including home runs from Javier Guzman, Jorge Cortes, Josh Bonifay, and Tom Evans.

Guzman continued his hot hitting going 4-for-6 with a double, homer and three RBI. The shortstop put the Curve up 1-0 with his second home run of the season off Fisher Cats starter Zach Jackson (2-3). On the road trip, Guzman hit .385 (10-for-26) with two home runs, eight RBI and three runs scored.

Ray Sadler, the only Curve starter that did not record a hit or score a run, made it 2-0 when he walked with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning.

Altoona broke the game open in the fourth inning as Guzman doubled home Craig Stansberry and Carlos Maldonado to make it 5-0. Two batters later, Evans singled home Rich Thompson and Guzman to extend the lead to 7-0.

Cortes hit his third home run of the season in the top of the fifth. After New Hampshire scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, Josh Bonifay answered in the top of the sixth inning by smacking his team-leading 14th home run of the season.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, Jose Bautista grounded into a double play scoring Carlos Maldonado. One batter later, Evans smacked his ninth home run of the season to make it 12-1. Evans finished 3-for-5 on the day with four RBI.

Altoona returns to Blair County Ballpark to start an eight-game homestand with four games against the Erie SeaWolves beginning Monday night. Curve right-hander Matt Peterson (6-4, 6.59) will take the mound against Erie righty Jeremy Johnson (6-4, 4.25) in a 7:05 PM start.
