New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT. - Thomas Watkins hit a bases-clearing double to highlight a five-run seventh inning, as the New Britain Rock Cats defeated the Baysox, 7-1, to capture the rubber match of their three-game set Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.

The Rock Cats pitching staff picked up right where they had left off at on Saturday night, as starter Jim Abbott (3-1) was absolutely masterful, limiting the Baysox (40-41) to only two hits while striking out six in seven innings of work.

In fact, Abbott and the Rock Cats staff have been so dominant over the last two contests, that when Brandon Fahey made his way to second base courtesy of a throwing error by fellow shortstop Thomas Watkins in the fourth, he became the first Bowie player to reach base safely in over 7.1 innings of play (22 batters).

The tide looked as it might be turning, as Simon Pond immediately brought the streak of ineptitude to an end, stroking an RBI single to right to plate Fahey to give the Baysox an early 1-0 lead.

Almost immediately, however, both the Baysox lead and any good fortune seemed to vanish completely, as in the bottom half of the inning, All-Star Danny Matienzo made it a 1-1 game with his seventeenth home run of the season.

What appeared to be a classic pitcher's duel between the southpaw DuBose and the Rock Cats righthander, went astray in the seventh, when the Rock Cats took advantage of a fielding error committed by second baseman Joey Hammond, by delivering two consecutive singles to grab a 2-1 lead.

With none out and runners on first and second, David Manning entered the game to make his second appearance with the Baysox. A wild pitch, two walks, and a three-run double later, Manning's afternoon came to an end with the Rock Cats now holding a commanding lead. New Britain would tack two more runs, both on sacrifice flies to bring the score to 7-1.

The five-run outburst was more than enough support for the host Rock Cats, as Jason Miller threw two scoreless innings of relief to close out the contest.

Despite delivering his second straight effective outing, Eric DuBose (5-9) suffered his ninth loss of the season. Over six innings of work, DuBose was charged with three earned runs on five hits and a walk, while notching five strikeouts.

BAYSOX NOTES: Eugene Kingsale has recorded two of the five total hits that the Baysox have produced over the last two games.

ON DECK: The Baysox will begin an action-packed eight-game homestand when they face off against the Harrisburg Senators tomorrow beginning at 6:05p.m. The Fourth of July celebration at Prince George's Stadium is set to include a spectacular post-game fireworks display and an attempt to set the world record for most people to ever simultaneously sit on whoopee cushions! LHP Kurt Birkins (4-5, 4.24 ERA)will take the mound for Bowie, while LHP David Maust gets the ball for Harrisburg.
