Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
A Three-Run Lead Isn't Enough...Again For the second straight night, the Binghamton Mets failed to hold onto a three-run lead, falling to the Akron Aeros 5-4 at Canal Park last night. The B-Mets went up 5-1 after five, but a four-run sixth capped off by a three-run double by former B-Met Javier Cardona put them on top for good. Aarom Baldiris was 2 for 4 with a two-run homer and three RBI and Corey Ragsdale also drove in his first run for the B-Mets who dropped their second straight at Akron.
Tale Of Two Bullpens B-Mets starters Bryan Edwards and Orlando Roman have combined to limit Akron to three runs over 10 innings in the series, but the Aeros have feasted off Binghamton's bullpen, touching up five B-Met relievers for six runs, five earned, in 8 1/3 innings. Meanwhile, Akron's bullpen has been superb, with three relievers combining to hold Binghamton scoreless over 6 1/3 frames.
Welcome Back Prior to yesterday's game, the B-Mets brought righthanded reliever Jeremy Hill back into the fold. Hill, who's 2004 season ended at Akron last June, is back after undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery and pitching seven games with High-A St. Lucie this year. As he works his way back to full strength, the Dallas, TX native, who also pitched for the B-Mets in 2003, is limited to 40 pitches per outing and won't be allowed to throw more than 25 pitches in any inning. Hill also won't be available on back-to-back days. The righthander is the third player the B-Mets have added since Thursday, when shortstop Corey Ragsdale and first baseman also arrived from St. Lucie.
(Not So) Good To See You Former B-Met Cardona (2004) made his first appearance against his old team last night, becoming the second former B-Met position player to face Binghamton this year. New Hampshire outfielder Ron Acuna (2002-2004) is hitting .194 in nine games against the B-Mets. Shortstop Gil Velazquez (2001-2004) was with New Britain when the B-Mets played there last month, but he did not see any action in the series.
On The Mound RHP Brian Bannister (9-2, 2.20) Last Time Out: Tue. vs. NB (L): 4 1/3 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 3 BB, K (L 12-6)...Brian turned in his worst outing of the season Tuesday, failing to throw five complete for just the second time this year. Brian had at least two men on in every inning, allowing a run in the first. Staked to a 5-1 lead, Brian coughed it up in the fifth, giving up six runs, including a game-tying three-run homer by Alex Romero. In addition to walking a season-high-tying three, the righthander hit two batters, doubling his season's total. It was Brian's first loss in eight starts (5/14 @ NOR).
This Season: The EL's wins and ERA leader had gone at least six innings in five consecutive starts prior to Tuesday and nine times in 16 starts overall. The righthander's allowed two runs or fewer in 12 of his starts, holding opponents to a .113 average (6 for 53) with men in scoring position. Brian will represent the Northern Division in the Eastern League All-Star Game on July 13th.
Against Akron: Brian's 2-0 with a 1.02 ERA in three starts against the Aeros this year. His last two starts against them were at NYSEG Stadium, getting a no-decision June 1st in Binghamton's 5-1 loss (6 IP, R, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 K) and earning a 3-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader May 4th (6 2/3 IP, R, 4 H, BB, 2 K), finishing one out shy of a complete game. Brian also faced Akron on Opening Night at Canal Park April 7th, earning a 3-1 victory (5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 9 K). Both hits in that game were singles by Pat Osborn.
Background: The 24-year-old Arizonan is in his third professional season after being drafted by the Mets in the seventh round in 2003 out of the University of Southern California
