B-Mets shut out

July 3, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Two Akron Aeros pitchers combined to limit the Binghamton Mets to two hits, shutting them out 2-0 at Canal Park Sunday and sweeping the three-game series.

Akron (43-38) lefthander Jeremy Sowers got off to a perfect start, retiring the first 16 to face him before allowing an infield single to Bobby Malek with one out in the sixth. Joe Hietpas then drew a walk and Corey Ragsdale reached on an error, loading the bases for Wayne Lydon. However, Lydon bounced into a double play, ending the inning and what wound up being the B-Mets' best scoring threat. Meanwhile, the B-Mets' (38-40) Brian Bannister was keeping Akron's bats at bay, allowing just three singles and a walk through the first six innings. After Bannister struck out the first two hitters in the seventh, Pat Osborn singled up the middle and Jon Van Every followed with a home run to right. Bannister (9-3) was the tough luck loser despite allowing just five hits and a walk and striking out seven in seven innings of work.

Mariano Gomez (1-2) came on for Akron with two out in the seventh and retired six of the first seven to face him before allowing an Aarom Baldiris double with two out in the ninth. The next batter, David Bacani, ended the game by hitting into a fielder's choice as the B-Mets were shut out for just the second time this season, with both occurring in Akron.

The B-Mets return to NYSEG Stadium on Independence Day, starting a four-game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Ken Chenard (6-6, 4.66) will start the series opener for Binghamton against New Hampshire's Dustin McGowan (0-0, 1.59). Game time is 7:00 from NYSEG Stadium with the Horizon's Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show kicking off the radio broadcast at 6:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF
