Curve homer their way to 4-2 win

READING, Pa - Hector Gimenez and Steve Lerud both homered to power the Altoona Curve past the Reading Phillies for a 4-2 win on Saturday night at First Energy Stadium.

The Curve jumped out to a 2-0 edge before Reading knotted the score, 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a two-run single by Brad Harman.

Hector Gimenez broke the tie when he blasted his first home run of the year off Reading (16-10) reliever Matt German (0-1) in the top of the sixth inning.

Steve Lerud extended the Curve lead to 4-2 in the top of the when he belted his second home run of the year to straightaway center field. With the homer, Lerud extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Left-hander Kyle Bloom made his first start of the year for Altoona (8-19) after being added to the roster on Friday from extended spring training. Bloom was returned to the Pittsburgh organization after being selected away from the Pirates system by Detroit in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft in December, 2008. Bloom tossed 4.1 innings and allowed a pair of runs and walked four batters.

The Altoona Curve will look for their first series win of the 2009 season as they attempt to take two of three games from Reading on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Curve will send righty Brad Lincoln (0-2, 3.88) to the hill while the Phillies oppose with right-hander Vance Worley (2-0, 2.37).
