Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Reading scored the first eight runs in Friday night's game with Altoona and went on to defeat the Curve, 9-4, at Blair County Ballpark. Kris Watts had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a home run and a pair of RBI in the loss for Altoona.
After neither team was able to send more than three men to the plate in the first inning, Reading sent seven men to the plate against Curve starter Jared Hughes (12-8) in the second inning and plated three runs off of the Curve right hander. With two away, Freddy Galvis reached on a fielder's choice that scored catcher Tuffy Gosewisch from third and made it, 1-0, Reading.
Gabriel Suarez followed with a ball hit well to right-center that went in and then out of the glove of centerfielder Anthony Norman that scored Galvis. Pitcher Tyler Cloyd (1-1) singled in Suarez and after 1.5 innings, Reading led, 3-0.
The R-Phils would add on two in the third and three more in the fourth to open up an, 8-0, lead. Hughes lasted just four innings and permitted eight runs (five earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Altoona finally broke on to the scoreboard in the fifth with its first hit of the game when catcher Kris Watts homered to right to make it, 8-1. Chase d'Arnaud homered in the sixth and Altoona was within six at, 8-2.
Reading scored once more off Tom Boleska in the seventh but Altoona countered right back in the bottom half when Norman singled in Matt Hague. Watts, who was running from first to third on the play, was thrown out by the right-fielder Keoni De Renne to end the inning.
In the ninth, Altoona loaded the bases against reliever Jason Anderson before Reading made a move to the bullpen. Sergio Escalona came in and induced a sacrifice fly off the bat Watts to bring Altoona within five but they would score no further as Yung-Chi Chen and Andrew Lambo were both retired to end the game.
Hague finished the game 2-for-4 and ran his consecutive games-on-base streak to 18 games with his two hits in the game.
The Curve (80-59) will look to snap a three-game losing streak when they square off with Reading (68-70) in the second game of the series tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. LHP Justin Wilson (10-8, 3.14) will throw for Altoona looking to be the stopper while RHP Chance Chapman (2-2, 4.72) starts for Reading.
A postgame fireworks show will follow the game on Saturday night at BCB. It is also the final Community Collection Day of the year and we're asking fans to bring non-perishable food items to the ballpark to be donated to the St. Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen of Altoona. Kids can run the bases after the game.
Pregame radio coverage begins at 6 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network. Great seats for the remainder of the homestand are available by calling 877.99.CURVE, visiting www.AltoonaCurve.com or by stopping into the box office at BCB.
