New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - New Britain avoided the major effects of Hurricane Earl but couldn't escape the Thunder as Trenton scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back as they romped the Rock Cats, 20-6 on Friday night.
Trenton pounded out 18 hits with each player in the lineup recording at least one hit. Daniel Brewer and Rene Rivera led the way with three hits apiece. Both players - along with Austin Krum - also knocked in four runs. Brewer also crossed the plate a game-high five times.
Justin Christian started the offensive explosion off for the Thunder as he led off the game with a base hit off Rock Cats' starter Bruce Pugh. Krum then popped up to center before it appeared Pugh had forced Brewer into an inning-ending double play. Shortstop Estarlin De Los Santos mishandled the ball, however, to keep the inning alive with two men on base. That would be the first of four Rock Cats' errors on the night. Pugh forced another fly out before Marcos Vechionacci lined a double into right field to knock in both runners. Rivera added a two-run double for the 4-0 lead.
In the second, the Thunder erupted for six more runs. Pugh walked the first two batters of the inning before Krum and Brewer delivered consecutive RBI singles. With two outs, Corban Joseph lined a double to center to knock in two runs to extend the lead, 8-0. Rivera blew open the game with a two-run shot over the left field wall.
Brewer added on two more runs with a triple to right field as part of a three-run third inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Rock Cats received an RBI single by Yancarlos Ortiz and an RBI groundout by Ben Revere that put the `Cats on the board, 13-2. Steve Singleton added a solo homer in the fourth for the Rock Cats.
The Rock Cats scored three more runs in the sixth when Chris Parmelee scored on a wild pitch and Jair Fernandez laced a two-run single to left field.
Pugh (0-2) lasted just 1 2/3 innings and was hammered for 10 runs - six earned - on seven hits and three walks. Matthew Williams was the lone Rock Cats pitcher to escape the game without allowing a run as he fired a scoreless ninth. Wilkins Arias (4-3) picked up the win in relief for the Thunder.
Fireworks Rescheduled: The post-game fireworks show originally scheduled for Friday night has been postponed until Saturday night. Fans with tickets from Friday night (Sept. 3) may exchange them at the Rock Cats' Ticket Office for General Admission tickets to Saturday night's game.
