TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Erie SeaWolves will meet in the series finale of a four-game series...The SeaWolves broke through a 1-1 tie with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning and added two more runs in the eighth to claim a 4-1, series-clinching win over the Flying Squirrels on Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Left-hander Clayton Tanner gets the start in the series opener for the Flying Squirrels...Received a no-decision in his last outing at Altoona 8/29...Allowed four runs on nine hits in four innings plus four batters...Walked two batters and did not strikeout any...Gave up back-to-back home runs to Chase D'Arnaud and Josh Harrison in the bottom of the fifth inning...Recorded six ground outs and four fly outs...Threw 72 pitches, 43 strikes...Failed to strikeout a batter for the first time this season...Has walked 13 batters and has struck out 12 over his last 19 2/3 innings (four starts)...Has failed to go at least five innings in three of his last five starts...Went 2-2 with a 5.34 ERA in six starts in August...Allowed 26 runs, 17 earned, on 40 hits in 28 2/3 innings last month (.342 OBA) while striking out 17 and walking 15...Went a combined 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA (22 er/72.2 ip) in 11 starts in June and July...Is 6-3 with a 2.73 ERA in 14 games at The Diamond while going 3-5 with a 4.72 ERA in 12 starts on the road...Left-handed batters are hitting .189 against him (21-for-111)...Is eighth in the Eastern League with a 3.58 ERA...Is 4-1 with a 2.97 ERA in six starts against Bowie...Has allowed 13 runs, 11 earned, on 29 hits in 33 1/3 innings against the Baysox while striking out 19 batters and walking eight.
Right-hander Ryhoei Tanaka gets the nod in game one of the series for the Baysox...Earned the win in his last outing at New Britain 8/29...Allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits in five innings...Struck out two batters and walked none...Has allowed eight runs, two earned, on 14 hits including three home runs over nine innings since returning to the rotation 8/24...Went 2-1 with a 7.20 ERA in seven relief appearances, allowing 23 hits in 15 innings (.359 OBA)...Is 5-11 with a 5.68 ERA in 21 starts, allowing 137 hits in 109 1/3 innings (.304 OBA)...Is 1-5 with a 8.80 ERA (30 r/30.2 ip) overall in seven games, six starts against the Flying Squirrels...Richmond batters are hitting .326 (42-for-129) with four home runs against him...Ranks third in the Eastern League in home runs allowed (22), is tied for third in losses (12), and is seventh in hits allowed (160)...Spent all of 2009 with Double-A Bowie in his first pro season in the United States...Went 4-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 21 games including 12 starts...Began the season in the bullpen and worked 12 scoreless innings before being moved to the rotation 7/4/09 at Altoona...Went 4-4 with a 3.63 ERA in his 12 starts...Native of Ishikawa, Japan.
ATTENDANCE WATCH: The Flying Squirrels enter play today trailing the Reading Phillies for the Eastern League lead in total attendance by 24,030...Richmond needs to draw 30,650 fans over its final four home games in order to top Reading in average attendance...The R-Phils lost two home openings due to weather while the Flying Squirrels lost just one.
GRAND FINALE: The Flying Squirrels offense posted 14 runs on 16 hits in last night's series finale at Erie...It was the fifth time this season that the club scored double-digits in runs (5/27, 7/23, 8/5, 8/8, 9/2) and the 14-run victory was the most one-sided victory of the season...The Flying Squirrels scored seven runs in the top of the sixth inning, the club's most productive offensive inning of the season while sending 11 men to the plate which matched a season-high...Richmond hit just .176 (16-for-91) with 25 strikeouts and five runs scored through the first three games...It was the 10th shutout of the season for the Flying Squirrels.
SEE YOU LATER: Richmond matched a season-high as the club launched three home runs in last night's win 14-0 win at Erie, the fourth time the Flying Squirrels have hit three home runs in a game...Brad Boyer and Conor Gillaspie each homered in the first inning marking just the second time this season that multiple Richmond batters have hit home runs in the same inning...Thomas Neal and Roger Kieschnick hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first inning 6/28 against Akron.
THOMAS THE TRAIN: Outfielder Thomas Neal is third in the Eastern League in doubles (40), is fourth in hits (152), and is fourth in total bases (230)...He leads the team with 43 multi-hit games...The 23-year-old is one double and eight hits away from matching the career-highs he set last season with Advanced-A San Jose...Ten of his 12 home runs have been hit on the road...Since 6/1, Neal is batting .311 (100-for-322) in 84 games with 29 doubles, nine home runs, 45 RBI, and 52 runs scored...He has raised his batting average from .255 to .291 over that span.
GOLD BOND: Infielder Brock Bond has hits in each of his last six contests...The 24-year-old is 8-for-26 (.308) with two doubles, three RBI, and six runs scored over his last six contests...Bond's season-long hit streak is nine games which came 6/16-6/16 while he was with Triple-A Fresno.
CATCHING ON: Catcher Tyler LaTorre has hits in each of his last five games, matching his longest hit streak of the season...Over his last five games, the 27-year-old is 7-for-18 (.389) with a home run, one RBI, and four runs scored...Prior to his recent streak, he was 6-for-62 (.097) over his previous 19 games...Defensively, LaTorre is 13-for-41 (31.7%) in throwing out base runners since Jackson Williams' promotion to Triple-A Fresno 7/1...He was previously 2-for-20 (10%) throwing out base runners.
Z-PACK: Catcher Eliezer Zambrano has hits in each of his last four games dating back to his last game with Low-A Augusta 8/15...The 23-year-old is one game shy of matching the longest hit streak of his career since making his domestic debut in 2007...He is 5-for-14 (.357) over that stretch with two doubles, and two runs scored...Zambrano had a five-game hit streak with Arizona Rookie League Giants 8/13/07-8/27/07.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 164 double plays in 137 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The Flying Squirrels have not gone more than three games without a double play this season...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Right-hander Mike MacDonald tossed five scoreless innings in last night's 14-0 win at Erie...The 28-year-old finished the season having tossed 13 consecutive scoreless innings...After rejoining the Flying Squirrels starting rotation 7/25, MacDonald went 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA (15 er/47.2 ip) over eight starts.
