Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Bowie Baysox held off the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 5-3, in front of 8,204 on Friday night at The Diamond. The win in the series-opener guaranteed that the Baysox would at least share second place in the Western Division at night's end.

Squirrels' left-hander Clayton Tanner worked himself into trouble quickly in the first inning with a one-out walk issued to Danny Figueroa. Ryan Adams followed with a single, and Joel Guzman brought both runners in for a 2-0 Bowie lead with a two-run double down the left-field line.

Jonathan Tucker added to the Bowie advantage when he led off the fifth inning with a solo-home run to left field off of Tanner. The Baysox got another run to lead 4-0 against the lefty in the sixth, again courtesy of Tucker, as he brought home Joe Mahoney with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Meanwhile, right-hander Ryohei Tanaka (8-12) atoned for his season-long struggles against the Squirrels with five scoreless innings. He earned the win, allowing just two hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.

Tanner (9-9) left during the sixth, taking the loss in his final start of the season over 5 2/3 innings. All told, he allowed four earned runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out three.

The Squirrels quickly got on the board against the Bowie bullpen, as Brock Bond led off the sixth inning with a triple to the right-field corner off of right-hander Wynn Pelzer. Bond scored on the play when Mahoney threw wildly on an attempted relay-throw to third base. Brad Boyer followed with a single and a batter later, Juan Ciriaco tripled to right-center field to pull the Squirrels within a pair of runs, 4-2.

Richmond pulled within a run in the eighth, as Boyer led off with a single against lefty Chad Thall. Thall was relieved and Ciriaco made it 4-3 with a single against right-hander Jose Diaz.

The Baysox got an unearned run in the ninth off of left-hander David Quinowski to cap the scoring, 5-3. That was enough, as Diaz finished the ballgame with 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his fourth save of the season.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 6:35 PM on Saturday night at The Diamond. LHP Jake Stevens (4-4, 2.54) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Eddie Gamboa (7-5, 3.70) for Bowie.
