Curve Bats Stay Hot, Hankins Wins First In 10-2 Victory

NEW BRITAIN, CT - The Altoona Curve offense continued its recent tear and starter Derek Hankins tossed seven strong innings in a series-opening 10-2 victory against the New Britain Rock Cats on a hot, muggy evening at New Britain Stadium in Connecticut.
The Curve closed out last week's homestand with season highs in runs (13) and hits (19) in a 13-4 win over the Connecticut Defenders on Sunday at Blair County Ballpark, and the Altoona offense picked right up where it left off after a day off Monday, clubbing 16 hits en route to the club's 11th win in 14 games.
Three players -- Jason Bowers, Luis Cruz and Anthony Webster -- each banged out three hits, while Jason Delaney and Shelby Ford added two hits in the Curve win. Ford led all Altoona batters with three RBI, while Delaney reached base safely four times with his two hits and a pair of walks. Brad Corley started the Curve scoring with a second-inning solo home run -- his sixth longball of the season.
Corley's homer gave Altoona a 1-0 lead until the Rock Cats evened the score with an unearned run against Hankins the bottom of the third. However, the Curve took command of the game, scoring four times in the fourth, twice in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Hankins (1-2) was sharp in notching his first win of the season and the first of his career at the Double-A level. In seven innings, the right-hander yielded just one unearned run on two hits, walked none and struck out four. He finished his time in the game by retiring 11 consecutive batters.
Errol Simonitsch (1-4) suffered the loss for New Britain after giving up seven runs and 12 hits in five innings.
The Curve will continue their six-game road trip Wednesday evening with the middle contest of their three-game series against New Britain. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. Altoona will send reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Yoslan Herrera (3-6, 3.61) to the mound against New Britain lefty Errol Simonitsch (1-3, 9.39). Fans can hear all the action on flagship station Real Oldies 93.5 FM and the Curve Radio Network beginning at 6:20 p.m.
