New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The Iowa Cubs utilized the home run a little better than the New Orleans Zephyrs on Friday, and were rewarded with a series split for their efforts. Todd Richie, Casey McGehee and Andres Blanco all hit their first home runs of the season for Iowa, who powered their way past the Z's, 5-2.

Richie hit a high fastball from Zephyrs starter Adam Bostick over the center field fence in the second inning to give the I-Cubs an early 2-0 lead. But Bostick settled down and kept the Z's close, and New Orleans tied the score at 2-2 on Shawn Wooten's first home run of the season in the seventh.

Bostick walked Blanco to lead off the eighth, and was removed after a sacrifice bunt by Bobby Scales. Tim McNab came on in relief, and McGehee greeted him by drilling a two-run home run to left to give the Cubs a 4-2 lead.

Blanco homered off Ivan Maldonado in the ninth for the final margin.

Bostick (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in 7.1 innings. The left-hander struck out one and walked two.

The Z's missed a scoring chance in the second inning when, after loading the bases with one out, Victor Mendez flied out to right, and with Gustavo Molina trying to tag up and score on the play, Scales threw a perfect strike to the plate to get the inning-ending double play.

Mendez later drove in the Zephyr's first run on an infield single in the fifth.

The Z's travel to Omaha to open a four-game series with the Royals at Rosenblatt Stadium on Saturday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
