Rivercats Top Sidewinders With Late Rally

Sacramento, CA - The Sidewinders blew a 3-0 sixth inning lead and lost to the Sacramento Rivercats 4-3 on Thursday night at Raley Field. The loss drops Tucson to a season low 11 games under .500 at 2-13.

Tucson starter Max Scherzer won the battle of highly touted pitching prospects with Rivercats starter Gio Gonzalez. Scherzer struck out 11 in five innings of work and allowed only two hits while walking one. In three Triple-A starts, Scherzer has worked 17 innings and allowed only seven hits. He has struck out 29 and walked three.

Gonzalez gave up a run on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts in five innings.

The Sidewinders scored in the top of the first on Trot Nixon's RBI single to center and extended the lead to 3-0 with two in the sixth. Miguel Montero homered to center on a 3-0 pitch and Javier Brito added a RBI single.

Sacramento started their rally on a Carlos Gonzalez RBI single against Clint Goocher in the sixth. Connor Robertson allowed a two run home run to Wes Bankston in the 7th, and after Jamie D'Antona's error allowed Brooks Conrad to reach to open the eighth, Jeff Baisley singled Conrad home to give Sacramento the lead and the win.

Jeff Gray worked the final inning and a third for his first win of the year. Leo Rosales was tagged with the loss after allowing the unearned run in the eighth.

The Sidewinders and Rivercats wrap up their four game series Friday night at Raley Field. Right-hander Emiliano Fruto starts for Tucson against lefty Dallas Braden for Sacramento. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:55.
