
Cubs Take the Series From Z's

Jeff Samardzija allowed two first inning runs, but settled in to pitch seven strong innings as the Iowa Cubs (40-34) beat the New Orleans Zephyrs (34-40) 7-3 tonight in front of 10,835 at Principal Park. With the win, the Cubs clinched a series victory over New Orleans and capped off their seven-game homestand with a 5-2 record.
After surrendering a two-run home run to New Orleans' John Lindsay with two outs in the first inning, Samardzija retired 13 of the next 16 hitters he faced and picked up the win (5-3). The right-hander allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings while walking two and striking out five. He threw 62 of his 86 pitches for strikes.
The Cubs took control of the game with six third-inning runs off New Orleans starter Rick VandenHurk (3-1). After Samardzija struck out to start the inning, eight straight Cub hitters reached base. Luis Rivas, Steve Clevenger, Chris Robinson, and Matt Camp each delivered RBI singles in the inning. Samardzija made the second out of the frame when he drove in Robinson with sacrifice fly into deep left field.
With his hit in the third, Steve Clevenger extended his hitting streak to nine games. During his current streak, the Cubs catcher is hitting . 382 (13-for-34).
Rivas, Camp, So Taguchi, and Bobby Scales each finished the night with two hits. Friday marked the third time during the seven-game homestand that at least four I-Cubs recorded a multi-hit game.
The Cubs travel to Round Rock for a four-game series against the Express before returning to Principal Park on July 1. Left-hander J.R. Mathes (7-4, 3.41) will pitch for the Cubs tomorrow and will oppose Round Rock right-hander Yorman Bazardo (7-2, 2.67). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Notes: Iowa reliever John Gaub made his triple-A debut in the eighth inning. The University of Minnesota product was promoted from double-A Tennessee on Thursday ... The Cubs stole three bases Friday, bringing their June total to a PCL-leading 39 ... Iowa pounded out 10 hits in the win, although none of the 10 went for extra bases. The Cubs are now 26-8 this season when collecting 10 or more hits ... So Taguchi and Chris Robinson have each hit safely in their last seven starts.
