PCL1 Albuquerque Isotopes

Cubs Take Game Two, 7-3

April 16, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

A three-run homer by Josh Willingham was all the Isotopes' offense could muster in a 7-3 defeat to the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park Saturday night in Des Moines, Iowa. For the Cubs (2-8), it was the first win against the Isotopes (8-2) in six games this season.

Iowa powered its way to the victory by way of three home runs; a two-run shot by Scott McClain in the fourth inning, a three-run round-tripper by David Kelton in the fifth, and another two-run homer by Mark Johnson in the sixth. The barrage left ‘Topes starting pitcher Jeff Fulchino (0-1) with his first loss of the season after allowing five runs in 4.2 innings. John Koronka (1-1) was charged with two runs and struck out seven in 5.2 frames of work to earn the win for Iowa.

The Isotopes placed a runner on third base in each of the first two innings, but failed to score. For the game, the ‘Topes left five men on base and were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Willingham's home run in the sixth inning cut the Iowa lead to 5-3 and was his second of the year. Derek Wathan had three hits and Matt Padgett and – strangely enough – Fulchino each had a pair of hits for Albuquerque. The pitcher singled up the middle in his first two at-bats. Wathan had two stolen bases for the ‘Topes.

Albuquerque will continue its series with Iowa Sunday afternoon at 12:05. Right-handed pitcher Travis Smith (2-0, 3.60) is scheduled to take the hill for the Isotopes against Iowa righty Bobby Brownlie (0-0, 1.50). Following the Iowa series, the Isotopes will travel to Omaha before returning to Isotopes Park on April 23 to host Oklahoma in a brief four-game home stand. Tickets are currently on sale for the rest of the season at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
