Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Damian Jackson hit a home run in his first game of the season and starter Steve Sparks picked up his first victory of the year as the Portland Beavers marked their home debut with a 7-2 win over the Sacramento River Cats before 7,161 at PGE Park Friday night.

Jackson's solo shot to lead off the bottom of the third sparked a five-run rally that gave the Beavers (3-6) a commanding 7-1 lead.

The Beavers wasted little time in gaining the edge, as Ben Risinger drove in Kerry Robinson and Jackson scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first for an early 2-0 lead.

In his second start of the season, Sparks (1-0) allowed two runs (1 earned) on five hits in 5.0 innings for the Beavers, who got two innings apiece from relievers Brian Falkenborg and Angel Tovar to secure the victory, their second in their last three games.

Adam Morrissey homered for the River Cats (5-4).

Steve Smyth (0-1) lasted just 2.2 innings in his second start for Sacramento, taking the loss after surrendering seven runs (5 earned) on seven hits.

Risinger was the lone batter with more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The home opener was followed by a special fireworks show, while Beavers players and members of the management team greeted fans as they entered the gates.

NOTES: The game was delayed by a few minutes as steady rain hindered pre-game preparations. The rain continued through much of the game, though there were no rain delays once the game was underway ... the Beavers have won three straight home openers after losing their first two after rejoining the PCL in 2001 ... the pregame festivities included performances by a barbershop quartet, clowns and complimentary magnet schedules for the first 3,000 fans in attendance.
