Iowa Cubs News Release
The Iowa Cubs were held to three hits as the Albuquerque Isotopes topped the Iowa Cubs 5-1 in their home opener Friday night at Principal Park.
The loss continued the Cubs' early season skid as they fell to 1-8 on the year.
Ben Grieve hit his second home run of the year for the lone Iowa run and starter Todd Wellemeyer was tagged with the loss in his first appearance for Iowa.
Principal Park saw 9,035 fans come through the gates to witness the first home game of the Iowa Cubs' 2005 season. This attendance was the largest Opening Day crowd in Iowa since 1992 when 10,749 fans were on hand for Opening Day.
The Cubs and Isotopes will meet in the second game of their four-game series Saturday night at Principal Park. Game time is set for 7:05 and left-hander John Koronka (0-1) will take the hill for the Cubs against right-hander Travis Smith (1-0).
