Iowa Cubs News Release
Metairie, LA - The Iowa Cubs (58-69) had a two-run lead two batters into the game, but lost 5-2 against the New Orleans Zephyrs (62-65) tonight at Zephyr Field. The Zephyrs claim the first of this five-game series and now lead the season series 8-4 over the Cubs.
In the top of the first inning, Julio Borbon lined a single off the glove of Alex Burg at third base, stole second, and coasted in when Jae-Hoon Ha lined a home run over the wall in left. It was Ha's second home run in three games and his fifth of the year. Zephyrs' starter Jared Rogers allowed a walk and another hit before getting out of the first inning. He worked through five innings and allowed just two more hits while striking out four.
Cubs' starter Yoanner Negrin cruised through the first three innings before running into some trouble in the fourth. WIth two outs, Rob Brantley doubled and scored on a base hit by Chris Valaika. Joe Mahoney followed with a double over the head of Ha in center that brought in Valaika with the tying run. Those were the only runs allowed by Negrin over six innings and he struck out seven in his third quality start of the season.
The Zephyrs took the lead against Alberto Cabrera in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Kevin Mattison worked a 12-pitch at-bat before drawing a walk. Mattison stole second before Cabrera walked Burg. Jake Smolinski lined a base hit to center field. Ha came charging in, but couldn't make the catch and the ball bounced past him into deep center. Mattison scored while Burg ended up at third and Smolinski reached second. With the infield in, Kyle Jensen ripped a line drive inside the third base bag that rolled to the left field corner for a two-run double and the Zephyrs led 5-2.
Steve Ames followed Rogers with two scoreless innings in relief and Jonathan Albaladejo set the Cubs down in order in the eighth. With one out in the top of the ninth, Edwin Maysonet and J.C. Boscan singled, but Chris Hatcher was able to lock down the final two outs to preserve the win and earn his league-leading 30th save of the season. Ames (3-2) was credited with the win and Cabrera (0-2) suffered his second loss in as many appearances.
The Cubs and Zephyrs continue this series tomorrow night at 6:00. RH Justin Grimm (2-2, 5.63) will start for the Cubs against LH Brian Flynn (5-10, 3.20) for the Zephyrs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 5:40.
