Iowa Cubs News Release
Metairie, LA - The Chicago Cubs recalled RHP Jake Arrieta to start against the St. Louis Cardinals today and optioned RHP Eduardo Sanchez to the Iowa Cubs. INF Josh Vitters and RHP Chang-Yong Lim have been placed on the disabled list and INF Greg Rohan joins the I-Cubs from the Arizona Rookie League.
Arrieta was 2-2 with a 3.56 ERA (12ER/30.1IP) in seven starts with Iowa since coming over to the Cubs in a trade from Baltimore on July 2. He struck out 39 batters, including a season-high 11 in a victory on August 4 at Tacoma. This is Arrieta's second call-up to Chicago. He also started game two of a double-header against the Milwaukee Brewers on July 30 and allowed one run on two hits in six innings.
Sanchez is 1-1 with a 3.70 ERA (10ER/24.1IP) with 24 strikeouts in 19 games with Iowa this season and 1-1 with a 3.71 ERA (14ER/34.0) in the PCL overall. Sanchez was pitching for the Memphis Redbirds when the Cubs claimed him off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals on May 21. He had his contract purchased by Chicago on July 27 and was 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA (4ER/6.1IP) in four games with Chicago. Sanchez is expected to join Iowa later this weekend.
For Vitters, this is his fourth stint on the D.L. this season. He was out most recently from July 26-August 12 with a strained right hamstring. He was activated on August 12 and played in two games before aggravating the injury while running the bases on August 13. Vitters has been limited to 28 games with Iowa this season and is batting .295 (26-for-88) with five home runs and 12 RBI for the year.
Lim has no record and a 1.23 ERA (1ER/7.1IP) in seven appearances since joining Iowa from double-A Tennessee on July 27. He is on the D.L., effective August 13, with a right shoulder strain. The Cubs signed Lim to a two-year minor league contract this past off-season as he returns from his second "Tommy John" surgery. The native of South Korea was one of the top closers in Japan for five seasons before his injury last year.
Rohan has been out of action most of this season due to a back injury. He has played seven games in the Arizona Rookie League and hit .286 (6-for-21) with a double and four RBI. He finished last season with Iowa and batted .290 (31-for-107) with four home runs and 24 RBI in 27 games. He homered twice in his Iowa debut on August 1 against Colorado Springs. He combined for 21 homers and 106 RBI between Daytona, Tennessee, and Iowa and finished second in the organization in both categories.
