Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Iowa Cubs (16-28) edged the Round Rock Express (19-28) by a final score of 2-1 thanks to 2B David Bote's two-run homer in the seventh inning of Wednesday night's contest at Dell Diamond.
E-Train starter RHP Tyler Wagner dominated in 6.1 innings, holding the I-Cubs to just one run on two hits while walking one and striking out five in the no-decision. Iowa starter RHP Duane Underwood (3-4, 3.35) earned the win after surrendering just one run on four hits while striking out six in 6.0 strong innings. Round Rock LHP Adam Loewen (0-1, 2.25) suffered the loss after giving up the go-ahead run on two hits while recording just one out.
The lone Express run of the evening came in the second inning as 3B Andy Ibanez worked a leadoff walk before quickly stealing second base. Following a Juan Centeno double play that moved Ibanez to third, Underwood skipped a wild pitch past C Chris Gimenez, allowing Ibanez to race home with the game's first run.
With a 1-0 lead behind him, Wagner went to work, facing just two over the minimum over the next five frames. The righty surrendered two singles and hit two batters, but was aided by a pair of runners caught stealing by Centeno.
In the sixth, Wagner walked 1B Efren Navarro before being replaced by Loewen. The lefty surrendered a go-ahead, two-run homer to Bote on his fourth pitch of the evening.
E-Train reliever RHP Tayler Scott turned in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to keep the deficit at 2-1, leaving hope for a late Round Rock rally in the bottom of the ninth. 2B Drew Robinson and Ibanez teamed up for a pair of one-out walks. DH Cameron Rupp then singled to load the bases for Centeno. However, the backstop grounded into an unconventional 1-4-6-3 double play to end the threat.
Round Rock and Iowa conclude their series on Thursday night. Cubs RHP Adbert Alzolay (2-3, 4.70) is scheduled to face an Express pitcher yet to be announced. First pitch on Military Appreciation Night at Dell Diamond is set for 7:05 p.m.
