Iowa Cubs News Release
ROUND ROCK, TX - David Bote cranked a seventh-inning home run to hurtle the Iowa Cubs (16-28) to a narrow 2-1 win over the Round Rock Express (19-28), Wednesday at Dell Diamond.
In a game that saw little offense with 10 combined hits, Round Rock worked a second-inning run without a base-knock as Duane Underwood Jr. walked back-to-back batters to open the frame. The righty forced a 6-4-3 double play and almost got away unscathed, but in the process, pushed the go-ahead runner to third. Underwood let a wild pitch loose to score the lone runner as the Express captured the edge.
Round Rock would hold on to the lead until the late innings as Tyler Wagner baffled the I-Cubs. Wagner held Iowa without a hit through three and allowed just five base runners through six. Lane Adams and Jacob Hannemann, reaching on a hit and a hit by pitch, respectively, were Iowa's only base runners through five, but both were quickly erased on caught stealings.
A one-out walk to Efren Navarro in the seventh chased Wagner from the game and his replacement, Adam Loewen, promptly gave up a home run to Bote on a 2-1 count. It was the infielder's team-leading sixth homer of the year as Bote snapped an 0-for-17 skid with the shot.
On the other side of the ball, Underwood was superb as he allowed a single earned run through six frames to collect a quality start. The righty gave up four hits, walked two and struck out six. Randy Rosario contributed a near flawless two innings, before surrendering the ball to Cory Mazzoni. Mazzoni would load the bags with one out in the ninth before forcing a double play to end the game and secure the save.
Iowa and Round Rock play the series finale at Dell Diamond tomorrow a 7:05 p.m. The I-Cubs then return to Principal Park for a five game homestand with the New Orleans Baby Cakes running Friday through Tuesday. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
