South Bend Cubs News Release

South Bend, IN: After starting pitcher Cam Sanders needed over 30 pitches to get out of the top of the 1st inning, it looked like a possible long Sunday afternoon at Four Winds Field in game two between the South Bend Cubs and Dayton Dragons. Dayton plated two runs to quickly lead 2-0, but Sanders escaped the inning and the comeback was on as the Cubs beat Dayton 7-2.

Sunday marked the fifth consecutive day where the opponent scored first against the Cubs. Like the previous two days, however, it marked the third straight day where they came back and won the game.

Sunday was no different as after the top of the 1st, Sanders settled in and the Cubs pitching staff did not allow a run the rest of the game. South Bend tied the game almost immediately in the bottom of the 1st inning. Delvin Zinn and Andy Weber started the frame with back-to-back doubles and both eventually scored.

The game went quiet until the bottom of the 6th inning, when the Cubs added two more. With the bases loaded, Chris Morel hit a hard ground ball towards second base with the Dayton infield in. The ball sizzled past second baseman Carlos Rivero and scored two runs. For Morel, he finished Sunday with three RBI to bring his season total to 23.

The Cubs kept the hit parade rolling in the bottom of the 8th, as three more runs scored with two of them coming on a big triple hit by Jonathan Sierra. Sierra's RBI total has now elapsed 30. Tyler Durna continues to lead the team with 42.

Out of the bullpen, Brendan King and Sean Barry combined for four innings of scoreless relief. King was the first man out of the bullpen in place of Sanders. The right-hander struck out four batters in three innings.

Barry missed out on a save opportunity due to the five-run lead and 7-2 final, but he tossed a scoreless 9th with two strikeouts of his own to finish the deal.

The Cubs now take a 43-35 record overall and 6-4 2nd half mark into the series finale tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. South Bend will look for the series sweep with their ace Riley Thompson on the mound.
