Cubs rain on Redbirds

Memphis, Tenn. - Iowa beat Memphis 6-3 in a rain-shortened series opener Monday night at AutoZone Park.

The Cubs struck first with Micah Hoffpauir's RBI-single in the first inning and added to the lead in the third when Eric Patterson lined a two-run homer over the right field wall to put Iowa up 3-0. Memphis answered in the bottom of the third with two runs. Chris Duncan put the ‘Birds on the board with a run-scoring double and Nick Stavinoha followed with a single to score Duncan. Felix Pie drove in two runs with a double in the seventh inning after Memphis had drawn within a run in the sixth on a David Freese solo home run.

The game was called in the top of the eighth inning due to rain. Iowa reliever and former Redbird Andy Cavazos notched the victory with three innings of relief. Cubs starter Sean Marshall allowed two runs on six hits over three innings. Memphis starter Brad Thompson took the loss in the first game of his rehab assignment. The right-hander gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits over 3.2 innings (52 pitches, 29 strikes).

Memphis will send Anthony Reyes to the mound tomorrow night to face Iowa's Randy Wells. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
