Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - Sometimes, it only takes a day. In Damon Hollins' case, what a difference a week makes! The Omaha Royals outfielder was named today as the Pacific Coast League's Batter of the Week, becoming the first Royals position player, and the second Omaha player overall, to win a weekly award from the league in 2008.
When last week began, Hollins was in the throes of a 3-for-35 (.086) slump at the plate. He broke out of it last Monday at Oklahoma, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. In five games during the week, the 33-year old Hollins was 8-for-16, smacking three homers, driving in eight runs and scoring four times.
Hollins is in his 17th professional season and first with the Royals after playing last year for the Yomiuri Giants in the Japanese Central League. Originally selected by Atlanta in the 4th round of the 1992 draft, Hollins has played in the Major Leagues with the Braves (twice), Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He was signed by Kansas City as a minor league free agent on December 12, 2007.
Hollins is the first Royal to win the PCL's Batter of the Week award since May 28, 2007, when Craig Brazell earned the honor. Earlier this season, former Omaha starter Jorge De La Rosa garnered the league's Pitcher of the Week honor for the week ending on April 20th. De La Rosa, who was the first Royals pitcher to earn that recognition since Brett Laxton in 2002, was traded by Kansas City to the Colorado Rockies on May 1st for a player to be named later.
Memphis hurler Jaime Garcia was named today as the PCL's Pitcher of the Week. The 21-year old lefty won both of his starts last week, posting a 1.98 ERA and chalking up 15 strikeouts in 13-and-two-thirds innings.
Fans may vote online for their favorite PCL players to give them a chance to play in the 2008 Triple-A All-Star Game to be held July 16th in Louisville, Kentucky. Just go to www.oroyals.com or www.pclbaseball.com to cast your votes.
