South Bend Cubs News Release
After seeing their five-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night, the South Bend Cubs (10-12) have now lost three in a row to the Fort Wayne TinCaps (10-12).
Fort Wayne's offense has scored the first run in all five games of this series and the TinCaps pitching staff has held South Bend to just one run in the last two games. Matt Waldron (6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 5 K) logged a quality start and Fort Wayne's starting pitching has allowed just two runs in 23 innings this series.
The first three batters reached vs. Cubs starter Chris Kachmar (5.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) in the third inning. One run came in on a 5-3 double play off the bat of Yorman Rodriguez and two batters later Tirso Ornelas tripled the lead with a two-out two-RBI double.
South Bend pitchers only allowed runs in one inning tonight, but the three runs in the third proved too much to overcome.
Waldron didn't allow a baserunner until the fifth when Tyler Durna singled to center, and two pitches later Nelson Velazquez singled as the Cubs were threatening for the first time. They stranded both runners but the offense started to pick things up.
The next inning Bradlee Beesley doubled down the line in left to lead things off and Delvin Zinn followed with a single. With runners at the corners and no outs Josue Huma hit a sac-fly to center to make it 3-1.
Brennen Davis stepped up next and doubled down the line it right, sending Zinn to third. Chase Strumpf and Durna were retired in order to follow and the Cubs stranded two in scoring position.
South Bend would threaten again in the ninth. Strumpf led things off with a single and a miscommunication between the center fielder and right fielder off a routine flyball from Durna and set up the Cubs with runners at first and second and no outs, down 3-1. Velazquez struck out and Jake Slaughter grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Next Up: RHP Gabe Mosser (1-0, 2.08 ERA) vs. RHP Max Bain (1-1, 6.75 ERA).
Tomorrow night is a special Sunday night 7:05 PM start time, with post-game fireworks after the final out presented by 1st Source Bank, WNDU and Sunny 101.5 FM.
