Memphis, Tenn. â The Iowa Cubs pounded out 14 hits, scoring five times over the first three innings on their way to an 8-1 win over the Redbirds Friday night at AutoZone Park.
Iowa used four consecutive one-out hits to build a 3-0 advantage in the second inning, and added two more runs in the third. After Memphis RF Dee Haynes got the Redbirds on the board with a solo home run on the first pitch in the seventh inning, the Cubs got a three-run blast from Jason Dubois to put the game away in the eighth. 3B Scott Seabol had two hits for the Redbirds, and 2B Bo Hart extended his hitting streak to eight games.
RHP Alan Benes (3-8) lost his fourth consecutive game, allowing five runs on 11 hits in 5.2 innings, and Jon Leicester (6-2) earned the win for Iowa, starting in place of Todd Wellemeyer and tossing five shutout innings.
The third game of the series is tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. and will feature throwback uniforms and a Negro League tribute. RHP Jason Simontacchi starts for Memphis and will be opposed by Iowa's Shawn Sedlacek.
