Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA – The Nashville Sounds rallied for a 9-4 win over the Royals in the first of a four-game set Thursday night at Rosenblatt Stadium. Keith McDonald's three-run homer in the sixth off Omaha starter Jason Dickson (2-3) gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish and Scott Sheldon added a two-run shot in a three-run ninth inning that saw Royals manager Mike Jirschele ejected.

Jirschele's ejection came after several differences of opinion with home plate umpire Dave Aschwege, including one just a few pitches prior to Sheldon's home run when Chris Truby appeared to be caught stealing after leaving first base too early. However, Aschwege called a balk on Matt White, prolonging Nashville's last at-bat. Aschwege had also spent several minutes barking towards the third base dugout after Rich Thompson led off the ninth with a bunt and was called safe on a close play at first base.

Jirschele's first beef with Aschwege happened in the bottom of the eighth, when Sounds left fielder Andy Abad made a terrific catch of a foul ball up against the side wall, before the baseball popped out of his glove. Aschwege, who was almost at third base to make the call, ruled that the ball did not come out of Abad's glove until he was reaching in to pull it out and throw it back to the infield.

Thompson was the star for Nashville, collecting three singles and a walk, scoring four runs and picking up three stolen bases. Abad added two RBI singles to his nice catch.

Adrian Brown scored one of the most memorable runs of this season – if not in the history of the Omaha Royals – in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Following Brown's one-out walk, Wilton Guerrero laid a sacrifice bunt down near the third base line. Nashville pitcher Kevin Jarvis (1-4) fielded the bunt and threw out Guerrero at first. Brown, sensing that third baseman Luis Figueroa had charged the bunt raced around second and dashed for the empty third base bag. As first baseman Chris Truby flipped the ball back to Jarvis at the mound, Brown noticed that Nashville catcher Keith McDonald had belatedly tried to cover third, so he broke for home and out-raced Jarvis to the plate.

Jarrod Patterson, who had to replace Paul Phillips in the Royals lineup after Phillips was involved in a home plate collision while scoring in the second inning, homered in the sixth. Patterson's fifth home run of the season cut Nashville's lead to 5-4. However, Mike Johnston, Chris Fussell and Frank Brooks combined for three scoreless innings of relief, with Brooks earning his second save.

Game 2 of the series is Friday at 7:05: Nashville LH Cory Stewart (4-2, 4.39) vs. Royals LH Les Walrond (3-3, 4.40). The pre-game show airs at 6:45 on Fox Sports Radio 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
