Iowa Cubs News Release

Salt Lake struck Iowa Cubs pitching for four doubles as the Bees defeated the Cubs 9-4 Monday night at Principal Park.

The Bees connected on a pair of extra base hits off Iowa starter Mike Burns, who took the loss (7-9) in front of 7,326 fans and 168 dogs on dog night at muggy Principal Park.

It was Iowa, however, who took the lead in the first inning, after Burns worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top half by getting Brandon Wood to pop out and Dee Brown to fly out. Bobby Scales led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a groundout by Luis Figueroa. Micah Hoffpauir made it a 1-0 I-Cubs lead when he drove in Scales with his team-leading 27th double of the season off Bees starter Anthony Ortega. Casey McGehee drove in Hoffpauir with an RBI single to build up a 2-0 lead.

The Cubs could not maintain the lead as Salt Lake struck for three runs in the second inning. Adam Morrisey trimmed Iowa's lead by driving in Adam Pavkovich with an RBI single to center field. Sean Rodriguez tied it at two when he drove in Ben Johnson with a sacrifice fly. The Bees took the lead for good when Morrisey scored on an RBI single by Freddy Sandoval for a 3-2 lead.

Salt Lake added five more in the fourth with a two-out rally that saw the Bees connect on two extra base hits. Brandon Wood's three-run home run to center field gave them an 8-2 lead.

Iowa added three doubles of their own, with the second coming in the fifth as Josh Kroeger drove in Hoffpauir with a drive to make it an 8-3 Salt Lake lead.

After a Dee Brown RBI double in the sixth, Iowa added their fourth and final run of the night as Figueroa scored when Casey McGehee grounded into a double play.

Sandoval finished the night 4-for-5 with a pair of runs and RBI. First baseman Kendry Morales added three hits for the Bees. Ortega picked up the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits, in five innings of work.

Hoffpauir and Andres Blanco had two hits for the I-Cubs while Kroeger tallied three.
