Oklahoma City Comets News Release
HIGHLIGHTS: The Oklahoma RedHawks defeated the Tucson Sidewinders 13-7 Monday afternoon AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The RedHawks plated seven runs in the eighth inning to cap off their 65th win of the season. Chris Shelton had four hits to pace Oklahoma, including a home run and two doubles driving in three in the victory.
Oklahoma took a 2-0 first inning lead on Shelton's solo home run, his sixth of the year as a RedHawk, and a run scoring triple by Ryan Roberts. Nick Trzesniak added a two run home run in the second to extend the lead to 4-0. Tucson halved the deficit against Oklahoma starter Michael Ballard with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, knocking the southpaw from the game in the sixth. The RedHawks added two runs in the home half of the inning on sacrifice flies for a 6-2 lead.
The Sidewinders, however, gained the lead in the eighth off the Oklahoma's bullpen. Joselo Diaz walked four of the five batters he faced, and Tucson rallied for five runs in the inning, including a pair on a double by Donnie Kelly. The RedHawks would answer in the bottom of the inning. Oklahoma sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on six hits and two walks to take a 13-7 lead.
Bill White (3-1) was charged with a blown save after relieving Diaz, but pitched the ninth for the win. Reid Mahon (0-2) was also charged with a blown save and took the loss. Shelton paced Oklahoma with the four hits. Roberts had three, while Mayberry and Gold had two hits each. Roberts, Trzesniak, and Casey Benjamin added two runs driven in apiece. Four Sidewinders had multi-hit games to lead Tucson.
The RedHawks notched their 65th win of the season in 11 fewer games than it took to reach the same total last year. Oklahoma and Tucson will square off in the third game of this series on Tuesday night at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Derek Lee is slated to pitch against Max Scherzer with a 7:05 first pitch scheduled.
