Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Paul McAnulty drove in five runs and combined with Chip Ambres on back-to-back homers during a six-run third inning that propelled the Portland Beavers to a 9-5 victory over the Round Rock Express Monday night at PGE Park.
Brett Dowdy logged four hits and Matt Antonelli homered for the first time in 77 games to help the Beavers, who tallied 18 hits by getting at least one from each of the nine starters.
Things didn't start out so rosy for the Beavers (60-54), who dug early 3-0 and 4-1 deficits. But they batted around in the third, taking their first lead on Dowdy's RBI double and stretching it to a 9-4 advantage thanks to McAnulty's three-run blast and Ambres' solo shot.
Portland's Josh Geer settled in for his seventh win, allowing five runs (3 earned) and seven hits over six innings. After allowing the Express (53-64) four runs over his first two innings, Geer (7-7), who did not allow a walk, retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced over his next four frames.
Ron Chiavacci (4-4) gave up nine runs on a season-high 13 hits over just 2 2/3 innings of work for the loss.
Mark Saccomanno was 2-for-4 and clubbed his 24th home run to lead the Express, who have lost five of their last six games.
With the series tied at a game apiece, the Beavers play host to the Express again Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: The PCL named Portland's Wade LeBlanc its Pitcher of the Week on Monday after he went 2-0 with 13 scoreless innings and 17 strikeouts in two starts last week ... Antonelli's home run was his first since May 6 ... McAnulty has homered in five of his last eight games ... the Beavers have hit back-to-back home runs six times this season ... veteran pitcher Brett Tomko pitched a 1-2-3 seventh in his second appearance of a major league rehab assignment with the Beavers.
