Iowa Cubs News Release
Papillion, NE - The Iowa Cubs (40-55) scored nine runs on 10 hits in the third and fourth innings and beat the Omaha Storm Chasers (58-37) 9-1 at Werner Park this afternoon. With the win, the Cubs earned a split of this four-game series and split the eight games in Omaha for the year. The Storm Chasers won the overall season series 9-7.
The bottom of the order got the Cubs rolling in the top of the third inning. Welington Castillo and Blake Lalli opened the frame with singles against Storm Chasers' stater Nate Adcock. Jim Adduci followed with a bunt to advance the runners, but placed it so well, he was able to beat out the play for a hit. Leadoff man Alfredo Amezaga followed with a single to drive in the first run. The Cubs added a second run when Lalli scored while Dave Sappelt grounded into a double play. Adrian Cardenas followed with an RBI single, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by Josh Vitters before Adcock got out of the inning.
The Cubs chased Adcock (4-3) from the game with another rally in the fourth. With one out, Castillo and Lalli singled and Adduci followed with an RBI double to left-center. Amezaga drove in two with a flare to left, extending the Cubs' lead to 7-0. Sappelt followed with a ground ball to shortstop, but Tony Abreu threw the ball into right field for an error and the runners ended up at second and third. Adcock gave way to Tommy Hottovy out of the bullpen, but Cardenas greeted him with a line drive double down the right field line for two more RBI that gave the Cubs a 9-0 lead.
Cardenas matched a season-high with four hits to lead the Cubs' 14-hit performance. Vitters' double in the third inning was his 28th of the season. That tied a career-high while extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Lalli matched his season-high with three hits, including a double, and scored twice. Amezaga has hit safely in a season-high eight straight games after two more hits today.
The big lead was more than enough for the Cubs' pitching staff. Starter Chris Rusin (7-6) allowed one run on two hits, walked four, and struck out three in five innings for the win. The only run he allowed came in the fourth inning when he hit David Lough with a pitch while the bases were loaded. Esmailin Caridad allowed one hit over two scoreless innings and Jeff Beliveau was perfect in the eighth. Jay Jackson allowed a hit and walked two in the bottom of the ninth, but got Johnny Giavotella to fly out to end the game.
The Cubs return home tomorrow night to start a four-game series against the New Orleans Zephyrs at Principal Park. RH Rodrigo Lopez (2-4, 4.63) will start for the Cubs against RH J.D. Martin (4-7, 6.96) for the Storm Chasers. Game time is 7:05. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
