Hillsboro Hops News Release
HILLSBORO, OR - In comparison to the offense on display the first two tilts between the Canadians and Hops, tonight was a shootout. Vancouver posted a rollicking five hits en route to a 3-0 victory over Hillsboro. The two teams combined for 11 total hits through the first two games, both Hillsboro victories.
Both starting pitchers in Friday's contest were phenomenal. Hillsboro (32-22, 10-6) right-hander Carlos Hernandez, the Northwest League leader in ERA entering the game at 1.68, was nearly flawless. He threw six baffling innings, allowing just a single hit while walking two and striking out nine. His ERA fell to an impossible 1.52, and through 65 innings pitched in 2015, he has allowed an astonishing 37 hits.
But if your team doesn't score any runs, sometimes those innings are not enough. Vancouver (23-31, 7-9) starter Jon Harris, Toronto's first round selection in the 2015 draft was solid for the Canadians, yielding four hits and two walks through five innings without allowing a run. Late addition to the roster, lefty Angel Perdomo followed Harris and was spectacular. The 6'6" southpaw threw four shutout innings, striking out seven and walking only one.
Neither offenses could muster anything against the starters. Kevin Simmons was assigned the top of the seventh for the Hops and allowed an unearned run. Vancouver shortstop perfectly executed a sacrifice bunt to score Ryan Hissey. A passed ball earlier in the inning rendered the run unearned.
Vancouver tacked on two additional runs in the bottom of the eighth - this time earned. Arizona's 2015 fourth round selection Breckin Williams didn't have his best stuff. He allowed three hits while walking one as the Canadians jumped ahead 3-0.
From there, the Perdomo show continued as the Hops left the lumber in the dugout. The Canadians walked away with the 3-0 victory as the Hops couldn't mount a charge in the final frame.
Of note, Hops newcomer Joey Armstrong made his Hillsboro debut in centerfield and went 2-3 with a stolen base.
The Hops and Canadians engage in game four of the five game series tomorrow night at 5:03 PM. LHP Cody Reed will try to keep up the trend of dominant starting pitching, following tremendous outings from Tyler Bolton, Brett Shankin, and now Hernandez. Pregame radio is at 4:30 PM on Rip City Radio 620 AM.
