
Crushers Win Series Opener in Schaumburg

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, scored four runs in the fourth inning and held on late to beat the Schaumburg Boomers (7-11) by the score of 5-4 on Friday night.
Lake Erie (12-7) took advantage of two walks, issued by starter Kit Fowler (0-4) to begin the fourth inning. Dalton Wheat opened the scoring with an RBI single, making it 1-0. Cody Lenahan and Bryan DeLaRosa followed with sacrifice flies, each scoring a run and Lake Erie led 3-0.
Later in the inning, leadoff hitter Dane Hutcheon singled home a run and the lead was 4-0.
Ben Smith made his first start of the year for the Crushers. He went 4.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits. All three runs were scored in the fifth inning, including a two-run single by Ty Moore.
The bullpen for the Crushers took over from there. Mason Klotz (2-0) threw 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He allowed three hits and struck out two.
The Crushers tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, when Hutcheon singled home Aaron Hill. Hutcheon went 2-5 with two RBIs in the game. He leads the team with a .328 average.
Newcomer, Ethan Westphal tossed a scoreless eighth inning before Justin Sinabaldi entered in the ninth with a two-run lead.
The Boomers began their rally after a single by Josh Gardiner. An error allowed Jack Parenty to reach and then Sean Godfrey had an infield single. Sinabaldi got a huge strikeout for the first out and then Clint Hardy grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring a run. With two outs, Moore lined out to Hill, ending the game.
Lake Erie will send Nick Deeg (2-0) to the hill tomorrow while Schaumburg goes with Gunner Kines (0-0). Game time is set for 6:00 CDT.
