Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers scored twice in the bottom of the eighth, staving off a Florence Freedom rally and a rain delay at All Pro Freight Stadium in a 5-3 win on Saturday night.
The Freedom (41-36) rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the eighth inning, scoring twice to tie the game. Peter Fatse led off with a double, and Eddie Rodriguez followed with a comebacker on which Fatse was thrown out in a rundown. Rodriguez advanced to second in the rundown, and Drew Rundle drove him in with a single. Jim Jacquot followed with a single to put Freedom runners on the corners, and John Malloy hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Rundle.
The Crushers (43-34), though, rebounded quickly in the bottom half. Daniel Bowman singled leading off, and Robbie Kuzdale's sacrifice bunt moved Bowman to second. Lake Erie's Wally Correa then grounded to third, but Fatse, after fielding it cleanly, threw wildly to first, allowing Bowman to score the go-ahead run. Brian Erie singled to score Correa for the 5-3 Lake Erie edge.
Lake Erie kicked off the scoring in the first, as Andrew Davis - who was honored with his own bobblehead on Saturday - doubled home Jason Taylor, who had singled and stole second ahead of Davis. In the second, Bowman singled and advanced to third on Correa's single. With runners on the corners, Correa attempted to steal second, but stayed alive long enough to allow Bowman to score.
The Crushers pushed their lead to three in the sixth. Davis doubled, moved to third on Russell Moldenhauer's groundout and scored when Florence second baseman Pierre LePage threw wildly to home, allowing Davis to score.
Lake Erie's Jonathan Kountis (5-2) earned the win for Lake Erie, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings. Florence's Brad Allen (0-1) pitched the eighth and took the loss.
The Crushers will continue finish their three-game series with the Florence Freedom at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday evening. Left hander Paul Fagan (7-5, 3.39) will start for the Crushers, and the Freedom will counter with right hander Alec Lewis (4-7, 4.74). The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
