Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums tied a season high with four homeruns leading them to a sixth win in a row and 50th of the season as the Beach Bums downed the Schaumburg Boomers 12-2.

With Schaumburg leading 1-0 in the second, Chase Burch led off the inning with a single before Jeff Flagg curled a ball just inside the foul pole down the rightfield line to put Traverse City up 2-1. After a Kyle Colligan double, Sean Gusrang hit a grounder to move Colligan to third where he stood when Alex Rivers uncorked a wild pitch to score Colligan and make it 3-1.

The Beach Bums would tack on two more in the third as Brian Heere led off with a double. Three batters later, Flagg clocked a no-doubter to centerfield, his 18th homer of the season to make it 5-1.

In the fourth, TC used the long ball again as starting the inning Gusrang walked and Nidiffer singled. After a Kyle Eveland sacrifice moved the runners up, Ryan Still hit a towering homer to right to make it 8-1. Two batters later, Jose Vargas capped the inning with a solo shot, his 26th of the year to put the Beach Bums ahead 9-1. The Boomers would score one in the sixth and Traverse City would counter with three in the bottom of the inning to round out the scoring.

On the mound, Scott Dunn, surrendered a leadoff homer to Karexon Sanchez and then did not allow Schaumburg another hit until the sixth, in picking up the win. All told, Dunn (5-3) allowed two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out five. Bennett Whitmore went the final three innings for his first professional save. Rivers (2-3) took the loss.

In addition to the homeruns, the Beach Bums saw Ryan Still make some Frontier League history. His two walks in the game gave him 86 on the season, breaking the single-season base on balls record for the FL that stood since 1998 when Morgan Burkhart walked 85 times for the Richmond Roosters.

The series wraps up on Sunday with a FAMily Funday Sunday with a team action poster giveaway. Kids tickets are half price with the purchase of an adult chairback seat, kids ages 5-12 can run the bases after the game and there will be a full team autograph session following the contest. Kurt Wunderlich (1-0, 4.50) gets the start for Traverse City against Cody Griebling (4-1, 1.75) for the Boomers. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
