Lake Erie Crushers News Release
CRESTWOOD, Ill.- The Lake Erie Crushers were taken down by the Windy City ThunderBolts, 7-2, at Standard Bank Stadium on Sunday evening. The Crushers took an early 2-0 lead but that was erased by the T-Bolts as Windy City's offense came to life in a big way from the sixth inning on.
The loss for the Crushers (33-44) was their fourth loss on the six game road trip. For Windy City, (33-44) the win is their seventh victory in their last 10 tries at home.
Like they did in the first two games of this series, the Crushers were able to cross the plate first. In the third inning, Daniel Aldrich walked to lead off for Lake Erie and would move over to third as Cody Stevens laid down a sacrifice bunt to Windy City's pitcher Jake Fisher (4-6). With two outs, Trevor Stevens doubled into the left field gap, plating Aldrich and giving the Crushers an early lead.
Trevor Stevens was in the middle of another scoring play for the Crushers in the sixth. Stevens walked at the beginning of the inning and moved over to second on a groundout to first base by Chandler Brock. Jose Barraza then came up and knocked in a run with his single to put Lake Erie up 2-0 over Windy City.
The ThunderBolts would come back, however. Alex Chittenden led off the inning and made his way to first after being hit by a Brad Zambron (3-5) pitch. Zambron, the Crushers starter, then saw a ball drop into the outfield off the bat of Tyler Clark. Cody Stevens was given the error on the play, and with runners on first and second and one out, Mike Torres hit a single that plated Chittenden and moved Clark to second. Windy City then took the lead on a long ball. Ryan Connelly came on to pitch for the Crushers and the first batter he saw, Max White, hit his ninth home run of the season. The three run homer put the T-Bolts up 4-2.
Windy City would add onto their lead over the next two innings. In the seventh inning, Jacob Tanis hit his fifth homer of the year. In the eighth, Coco Johnson started the inning with a double and with one out, Austin Gallagher hit his 12th home run of the season to put the ThunderBolts up 7-2.
The Crushers did threatened to come back in the eighth as Austin Prott singled to center with one out. Trevor Stevens then doubled to left and Prott stopped at third. Fisher then struck out Chandler Brock and then Jose Barraza hit a ball toward short that hit the runner, Stevens, for the final out of the inning.
Prott went 1-4 and extended his on-base streak to 21 straight road games. Trevor Stevens went 2-3 with an RBI and a run for the Men of Crush. Barraza went 1-4 on the day with an RBI and 4-11 in the series. Juan Sanchez went 1-4 in this game and 4-12 in the series.
For the Crushers on the mound, Zambron was very strong, going 5 2/3 innings allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits and struck out five but was saddled with the loss. Connolly went 1/3 of an inning as he got the Crushers through the sixth inning. Ryan Richardson gave up a run in his inning of relief and Daniel DeSimone then allowed two runs and three hits in an inning of relief. Fisher went the distance for Windy City, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out seven in the complete game victory.
The Crushers will come back home on Tuesday to take on the Normal CornBelters at All Pro Freight Stadium. The Crushers will go with right hander Brad Duffy (7-3, 3.29) and Normal with throw righty Robert Baroniel (2-2, 3.56). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
