Washington Wild Things News Release

NORMAL, IL-The Wild Things battled the CornBelters throughout Sunday afternoon, forcing two stalemates and extra innings, but a walk-off single in the 10th proved fatal for Washington as Normal was able to squeak out the 5-4 victory. Cole Brocker picked up the late-inning win, while Jonathan Kountis suffered the loss.

After a Normal error in the first allowed the Wild Things to take a 1-0 lead, the CornBelters responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third off of a Santiago Chirino groundout. The CornBelters took a 3-1 lead later in the fifth when former Washington catcher Jim Vahalik plated Ozney Guillen with an RBI single and scored on a Wild Things error.

Washington was held hitless until the top of the seventh when center fielder Danny Poma connected on a single that sparked four straight hits for the Wild Things to knot the game 3-3. RBI's were credited to catcher Maxx Garrett and left fielder Andrew Heck.

Another RBI single from Vahalik in the eighth gave Normal a 4-3 lead late, but Washington was able to answer again in the ninth thanks to a run-scoring double from Garrett. A scoreless pitching performance from Kountis in the home half of the inning forced extra innings.

After a dropped third strike allowed a base runner for Normal, Guillen was able to deliver the game-winning single for the CornBelters' 5-4 victory.

The Wild Things will return to CONSOL Energy Park on Tuesday, August 18 to play host to the Windy City Thunderbolts. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For tickets, please visit the Wild Things front office, call 724-250-9555 or visit www.washingtonwildthings.com.
