June 29, 2018 - Frontier League (FL)
Lake Erie Crushers News Release
JOLIET, ILLINOIS. - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, came into Joliet fresh off a dramatic win on Thursday night but they couldn't produce a timely hit to beat the Slammers on Friday night. Joliet scored in three straight innings to take the series opener 4-2.
In just his second game back from the DL, Dane Hutcheon opened the scoring in the third inning with his first home run of the season. That came off of starter Liam O'Sullivan who settled in after that.
Lake Erie starter Ethan Westphal got off to a strong start before allowing a run on an RBI single to LJ Kalawaia in the third inning. The Slammers took the lead in the fourth when Justin Garcia hit his ninth home run of the season.
The Joliet offense tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Trenton Hill singled home two runs, making it 4-2. Westphal (1-3) went six innings while allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out six as well.
O'Sullivan kept the Crushers offense from sustaining any sort of rally. Lake Erie had a lead off hit in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth but managed only one more run. An RBI single from Bryan DeLaRosa in the seventh got Lake Erie within two but that would be as close as they got. DeLaRosa now has a team-high 22 RBIs.
With the tying run at the plate in the ninth, O'Sullivan (5-2) got DeLaRosa to ground out securing his third consecutive complete game.
Lake Erie (25-18) will send Sean Renzi (5-1) to the mound in game two tomorrow. Joliet (23-20) will turn to Daren Osby (0-0). Game time is set for 6:05 CDT.
